Illusions

Illusions, sweet little things

Soft as cotton candy, light

As a dove’s feather, easy on the eyes

Easy on the mind.

Illusions

Soft on the heart, delightful on the mind

Sugary sweet on lips, deliciously melts in the mouth.

Illusions

The soft duvet that covers your eyes

The kind that makes you blind

Illusions, the vicious viles

And not the kind

On which one builds whole futures. Castles

And empires shall sink in the mushy grounds

At the slightest hint of a storm, tears shall flood the thresholds

Hopes

Shall shrivel away, crumble apart, die

An untimely death in the fluffy light grounds.

Dreams are too heavy for cotton candy clouds.

  13. Whoa! I’d almost say this is a delicious confection, but that would scarcely be the complement I’d like to pay you, Carefree Wanderer.

Your litany of images that so many of us associate with pleasure or comfort is so effectively and startlingly interrupted by the pronouncement of their dark side, culminating with the fact that they are actually too insubstantial to support dreams, real dreams.

What a whack in the side of the head of the illusion! Thank you for this powerful poem.
